Let's take a look at a typical project...
Let's use a typical website with a decent amount of content and some nice graphics. Oh I don't know; we'll use www.section9studios.com – just a random website off the top of my head. Here is a breakdown of what's typically going to be involved during the planning, design, creation and launch of this website.
- Planning & Project Management – Meetings at the start and throughout the project to discuss the goals and requirements for the website. What is the primary reason the website exists? What kind of special features does it need to incorporate? Are there any brand guidelines or specific visuals that need to be taken into account? - $1,000
- Storyboarding & Content Outlines – After the initial planning stages the first thing we will do is lay out the flow of the website, user interactions, and general content presentation through a series of sketches, wireframes, and storyboards. - $1,500
- Interface & Supporting Graphic Design – Once a solid foundation is established, we then move on to the design stage. We will create a mock up of the homepage and a secondary page, which will be used as the basis for the discussion, and subsequent revisions. - $3,500
- Page Creation & Content Preparation – Once the design has been approved, it's ready to be coded ensuring proper search engine optimization and standards based accessibility. We code everything from scratch and make sure it's unique and specific to your exact requirements. During this phase, all of the content is also prepared which will require periodic discussions to ensure the material is being presented properly. - $4,500
- Testing & Site Launch – We have gone through every aspect of the site and are ready to flip the proverbial switch and make your new website live for the world to see! Even though we have reviewed the site hundreds of times, there are always last minute issues that popup and minor bugs that need to be squashed. - $1,000
Project Timeline: 8 weeks / Total cost: $11,500.00
While this is just a specific example, the amount of time required on any individual project can vary greatly. We pride ourselves on being able to work within any reasonable budget.
What else could add to the overall cost?
The above scenario is a perfect example of a basic website featuring a very unique and highly stylized design, a fair amount of content preparation, and some basic user interaction. However the launch of the website is actually only the beginning. We always tell our clients “Your website is never actually finished. It is always a work in progress.”
Some other things to consider when starting your website creation process:
- Content Management – how will you make timely updates to your website? Are you comfortable accessing your web server via FTP and downloading the HTML files and editing them by hand? If not you will likely need some form of content management system which will allow you to quickly and easily make changes to your website right from your actual website itself using easy to use web based tools.
- Search Engine Marketing and Ranking – typically just launching your website alone will not bring in tons of customers and traffic. They need to be able to find your website first right? The only way they are going to be able to do this is if they are searching for terms that are relevant to your website content (search engine indexing) or they are presented with your website as a sponsored result (search engine marketing). Search engine marketing is typically based on a pay-per-click model and involves monthly reoccurring charges and commitment.
- E-commerce – are you planning on selling any goods on your website? If so you will need to incorporate a shopping cart, secure credit card processing, and some form of product/inventory management tools. These can all be fairly sophisticated so it pays to make sure you plan for them accordingly from the beginning stages.
- Social Networking – one of the greatest concepts to be embraced by businesses around the globe is that of direct communication and interaction with their clients through various social networking websites. Facebook, Twitter, and Blogging are just some core examples of areas that you need to be utilizing to ensure that you are always on the mind of your clients. Most social networking tools can be setup and used fairly painlessly, however some allow more sophisticated customization and design options.
These are just a few examples of a number of different avenues that you need to consider when launching your new website. Depending on the complexity of your website and your target audience, some of these areas may not pertain to you.
Hopefully you now have a good understanding of what's actually involved in creating and launching a typical website.
